Design Principles: Project 1 (Self Portrait)


After the exercises, we were asked to make a self-portrait while using the principles learned. This is a particularly hard task for me to do as I barely go out of the house and hard to find inspiration. Then, I realised I wanted to show myself as a plushie or someone who is surrounded by blanket because my room is cold and I was busy playing games day-in and day-out.

Draft Process

After consultation, Ms Anis said that she liked the idea of me being a plushie-blanket. She advised to add the plushies beside me to emphasize the idea of the plushies. She added that I could do an animated gif where the eyes of the plushies are blinking while my hands are moving with the controller.

Final Design


After the last consultation, Ms Anis noticed that the background was a bit plain and dull. She advised me to add a bit of a wallpaper that can match my theme. Initially I wanted a wallpaper filled with butterflies, but after thinking about it, my drawing was perky, and wanted a wallpaper that was as perky as my drawing. That's when I decided to make a slab of butter with wings, butter-fly.

Illustration & Visual Narrative: Project 2 (MyTIGER Values Art Competition 2023) For Project 2, we had to enter a competition under Maybank titled 'MyTIGER Values Art Competition 2023', which is also a requirement. The theme for this competition was designing an illustrative art under 12 Sustainable Development Goals (Figure 1.1). Figure 1.1: 12 Sustainable Development Goals by Maybank Ms. Anis told us to research on the topics that we find interesting by using Google, Pinterest, even ChatGPT to gain an understanding of the whole topic first before we brainstorm on ideas. We could find references and inspirations on Pinterest or Google and start drafting our designs. I decided to pick Life below water (11th SDG) to be my topic and found some posters regarding the topic. I had an idea of having a plastic bag filled with trash that leaks into the water that kills the aquatic animals while a boat would have two people holding the plastic bag (Figure 1.2). Illustration & Visual Narrative: Exercise 2 (Illustrative Typography) Using a Pictionary generator, we would generate two words that would help illustrate the said words into typography. I had words that were really really tough to put it together such as meteor and frying pan. I kept generating until I found a pair that I could see myself designing and got seaweed and stingray (Figure 1.1).  Figure 1.1: Pictionary Generator Drafting Process: I started to draft my stingray and seaweed. Initially, I wanted a body of a stingray with the words inside the outline with seaweed filling up the spaces (Figure 1.2). As I fill the colours in, I realised it looked much more creative if the words were made by seaweed (Figure 1.3).
